Files Overview

This set of pages covers aspects of interoperability that relate to files.

When trying to handle data from a wide variety of sources, the names given to the files and how they are stored can make a lot of difference as to how easy they are to handle. Following a few simple rules can make a lot of difference – this is discussed under "File Management".

As discussed under "File Types", the desire for interoperability should not place any requirements of the format of the files that are used; different formats are suited to different types of data and the system should be able to handle this.

What is important is that the file header properly describes the contents of a file – this is described under "File Metadata". Note that in these pages the terms parameter and keyword are used interchangeably in relation to files stored in FITS format.
